Short answer: the best IT asset management (ITAM) software depends on how you find your assets and where your tickets live. Lansweeper is the strongest pick for automatic discovery across a messy network. Snipe-IT is the best free option if you can self-host. Freshservice, Jira Service Management and SysAid make sense when you want assets inside your service desk. ServiceNow ITAM is the enterprise choice for software license compliance at scale, and ManageEngine AssetExplorer and InvGate publish the clearest per-asset prices for mid-sized teams.
Every price below is vendor-published, checked September 2026. Where a vendor only quotes on request, we say so instead of estimating.

What is an IT asset management system?
An IT asset management system is a single record of every piece of hardware, software and cloud service your organisation pays for: who has it, where it is, what it costs, when the warranty or license ends and when it should be retired. Good ITAM software fills that record automatically through discovery (an agent on each device, a network scan, or integrations with tools like Intune, Jamf and your cloud accounts) instead of relying on a spreadsheet someone updates twice a year.
ITAM usually splits into two jobs. Hardware asset management tracks laptops, servers, phones and network gear through procurement, assignment, repair and disposal. Software asset management (SAM) reconciles what you have installed against what you are licensed for, which is where the money is: unused licenses you can reclaim and audit exposure you can close. Enterprise asset management for physical plant and equipment is a separate category; see our guide to enterprise asset management software if you manage machinery or facilities.
The 10 best IT asset management tools, reviewed
1. Lansweeper: best for discovery
Lansweeper’s reputation rests on finding things. It runs several discovery methods and reconciles the results into one inventory across IT, OT, cloud and IoT assets, including unmanaged and shadow devices. That makes it a natural data source for other tools: it ships integrations for Jira Service Management, ServiceNow, Freshservice, Microsoft Sentinel and Splunk, among others.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): you can keep using it free for up to 100 assets after a 14-day full trial. Starter is from $239 per month billed annually and includes 2,000 assets and one installation. Pro is from $439 per month billed annually, starting at 2,000 assets and expandable to 9,000, with vulnerability and lifecycle insights and all integrations. Enterprise is custom and starts at 10,000 assets. See Lansweeper pricing for more detail.
Watch for: Lansweeper is an inventory and insight platform, not a service desk. You will still need somewhere to run tickets and approvals.
2. Snipe-IT: best free and open source option
Snipe-IT, built by Grokability, is the tool IT teams recommend on Reddit when someone asks for free ITAM. In the project’s own words it tracks “who has which laptop, when it was purchased in order to depreciate it correctly, handling software licenses”, through a web interface and a JSON REST API. Grokability’s homepage reports more than 22 million managed assets.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): the self-hosted edition is free with unlimited users and assets. Grokability’s hosted plans are flat fees with unlimited users and assets: Basic Hosting $39.99 per month or $399.99 per year, Small Business Hosting $99.99 per month or $999.99 per year, and dedicated hosting from $249.99 per month. See Snipe-IT pricing.
Watch for: Snipe-IT does not discover devices on its own. Most teams feed it from an MDM or inventory tool through the API, or scan barcodes during onboarding.
3. Asset Panda: best for mixed IT and physical assets
Asset Panda is highly configurable and mobile-first: field, IT, finance and operations staff scan barcodes and QR codes in the app, and every deployment, repair, transfer, depreciation and disposal lands in one history. Custom fields let you model assets that are not computers, so it suits organisations where IT is one of several departments tracking equipment.
Pricing: quote-only. Asset Panda does not publish plan prices; it offers a free 7-day trial of a fully featured account.
Watch for: it is a tracking system first. Automated network discovery and software license reconciliation are not its focus.
4. ServiceNow ITAM: best for large enterprises
ServiceNow sells Hardware Asset Management, Software Asset Management and Cloud Cost Management on the same platform as its ITSM and CMDB. The pitch is license reclamation, rightsizing cloud spend and audit readiness across thousands of assets, with AI agents that automate tracking and retirement.
Pricing: quote-only; ServiceNow publishes no prices.
Watch for: implementation and administration are real costs on top of licensing. If ServiceNow feels too heavy, compare it with the options in our ServiceNow alternatives guide.
5. Freshservice: best service desk with built-in ITAM
Freshservice pairs a fast-to-deploy ITSM with asset discovery for Windows, Mac and Linux, network, cloud and storage assets, a CMDB and lifecycle tracking. Tickets, changes and assets live in one place, which is what most mid-sized IT teams actually want.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): service desk plans are Starter $19, Growth $49 and Pro $99 per agent per month billed annually, with Enterprise on quote. Each plan includes 100 ITAM asset units; more are sold in packs of 500. Freshworks also sells ITAM as its own product line, where pricing “starts at $125/mo per 500 Asset Units” and the Pro tier adds software asset management and SaaS discovery. See Freshservice pricing.
Watch for: 100 included units disappear quickly. Price the asset packs before you compare Freshservice with standalone ITAM tools.
6. InvGate Asset Management: best transparent per-device pricing
InvGate combines an agent, network scanning and integrations with Intune, Jamf, Okta, the major clouds and ServiceNow. It adds license optimisation, software metering, a CMDB with automatic relationship discovery and end-of-life data.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): Starter is a fixed $1,499 per year for 500 IP devices. Pro is $5 per IP device per year, starting at $2,500 per year. Enterprise starts at $12,000 per year and offers on-premises hosting.
Watch for: pricing counts IP devices, so decide early whether printers, phones and IoT gear belong in scope.
7. SysAid: best for bundled service desk and assets
SysAid now sells itself as an AI-native service management suite, with asset management bundled in rather than sold separately: asset monitoring and CMDB, inventory and network discovery, and license management essentials.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): Professional is $89 per agent per month with 250 managed assets included and additional asset packs available. Enterprise is custom, starting at 20 agents.
Watch for: if you only need ITAM, you are paying for a full service desk.
8. ManageEngine AssetExplorer: best budget ITAM with SAM
AssetExplorer is still sold as a standalone product. It supports agent-based and agentless discovery, software license compliance, a CMDB, contracts and purchase orders, and barcode, QR and RFID scanners, and it integrates with ManageEngine Endpoint Central.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): the cloud edition is priced by asset count: $115 per month or $955 per year for 250 assets, $225 per month or $1,795 per year for 500, and $360 per month or $2,995 per year for 1,000. A 30-day trial covers 250 assets, and the free edition is limited to 50 nodes in the cloud and 25 on-premises.
Watch for: the interface feels older than Freshservice or InvGate.
9. Jira Service Management Assets: best for Atlassian shops
Atlassian now sells Jira Service Management inside its “Service Collection”, alongside Customer Service Management, Assets and Rovo. Assets is a flexible object database: you model hardware, software, people and services and link them to requests and incidents.
Pricing (vendor-published, checked September 2026): Free covers 3 agents. Atlassian’s calculator showed Standard at $20 per agent per month and Premium at $51.42 per agent per month at its default team size (the per-agent rate changes with agent count). Assets objects are now included on paid tiers: 5,000 on Standard, 50,000 on Premium and 500,000 on Enterprise, with extra objects from $0.02 per object per month.
Watch for: Assets gives you a flexible schema, not a finished ITAM process. Expect to design object types and import rules yourself.
10. NinjaOne: best when ITAM should ride on endpoint management
NinjaOne is an endpoint management and RMM platform whose asset management inventories agent-managed endpoints, network-discovered devices and offline devices, tracks warranty, age and depreciation, and normalises software licenses. If you already need patching and remote support, getting inventory from the same agent is efficient.
Pricing: quote-only. NinjaOne says it does not publicly list full pricing but states that it “starts as low as $1.50 USD per month at 10,000 endpoints, increasing to $3.75 USD at 50 or fewer endpoints”. Whether ITAM is licensed separately is not stated on the pricing page. There is a 14-day free trial.
Watch for: devices without the agent (printers, phones, IoT) rely on network discovery, so check coverage during the trial. For the wider endpoint side, see our RMM software and endpoint management software guides.
What is the best free software for IT asset management?
For most teams it is Snipe-IT, because the self-hosted edition is free with unlimited assets and users and has no feature gates. The trade-off is that you run the server and there is no built-in discovery. Other free routes, with limits:
- Lansweeper stays free for up to 100 assets after its trial, and includes discovery.
- ManageEngine AssetExplorer has a free edition of 50 nodes in the cloud or 25 on-premises.
- Jira Service Management is free for 3 agents.
- GLPI is an open source (GPL) IT and asset management suite maintained by Teclib’, with a paid cloud option.
One change worth knowing: AssetTiger, long cited as free, now offers a 30-day trial for up to 250 assets and paid plans from $20 per month for 500 assets (vendor-published, checked September 2026).
How much does IT asset management software cost?
Vendors price ITAM in four different ways, which makes like-for-like comparison harder than it should be:
- By asset count in tiers (Lansweeper, AssetExplorer, AssetTiger): predictable, and the cheapest route when a small IT team manages many devices.
- Per device per year (InvGate Pro at $5 per IP device) or per device per month (NinjaOne): scales linearly with your estate.
- Per service desk agent with an asset allowance (Freshservice, SysAid, Jira Service Management): cheap for small IT teams with modest estates, but watch the included asset limits.
- Quote-only (ServiceNow, Asset Panda): expect implementation costs on top of licensing.
As a worked example using published prices for about 500 devices: InvGate Starter is $1,499 per year, AssetExplorer cloud is $1,795 per year, and Lansweeper Starter is from $239 per month billed annually (about $2,388 a year) but covers up to 2,000 assets. Snipe-IT self-hosted costs nothing beyond your server.
ITAM vs ITSM vs CMDB: what’s the difference?
| ITAM | ITSM | CMDB | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | What do we own, what does it cost, when does it end? | How do we deliver and support IT services? | How are components configured and related? |
| Core records | Assets, contracts, licenses, depreciation | Incidents, requests, changes, problems | Configuration items and their relationships |
| Main owner | IT asset manager, procurement, finance | Service desk | IT operations, change management |
| Example tools | Lansweeper, Snipe-IT, AssetExplorer | Freshservice, Jira Service Management, SysAid | ServiceNow, InvGate, Freshservice |
In practice the lines blur: most service desks now ship asset modules, and most ITAM tools feed a CMDB. For the service desk side, see our help desk software guide.
How to choose IT asset management software
- Start with discovery. List how devices will enter the system: agent, network scan, MDM or cloud integration, or barcode scanning. A tool that cannot see half your estate will drift out of date within months. If phones and laptops are managed in an MDM, check the integration with your tool from our MDM software guide.
- Decide whether software licenses are in scope. Hardware tracking is cheap. Real SAM (license normalisation, entitlement reconciliation, SaaS discovery) is what moves you to Freshservice ITAM Pro, ServiceNow or AssetExplorer.
- Keep assets where tickets live, if you can. An asset record linked to incidents and changes is far more useful than a separate list.
- Count the pricing unit. Agents, assets, IP devices and endpoints all scale differently. Model your numbers in three years, not today.
- Pilot with a real scan. Every vendor on this list offers a trial or free tier. Compare discovered counts against what finance thinks you own.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best IT asset management software?
There is no single winner. Lansweeper is strongest for automatic discovery, Snipe-IT is the best free option, Freshservice or Jira Service Management suit teams that want assets inside the service desk, and ServiceNow ITAM fits large enterprises focused on license compliance.
Is Snipe-IT really free?
Yes. The self-hosted edition is open source and free with unlimited users and assets. You pay only if you want Grokability to host it, from $39.99 per month (checked September 2026).
Does IT asset management software find devices automatically?
Most do, but methods differ. Lansweeper, InvGate, AssetExplorer and Freshservice scan networks and use agents; NinjaOne inventories devices through its endpoint agent plus network discovery. Snipe-IT and Asset Panda rely on imports, integrations or barcode scans.
What’s the difference between ITAM and SAM?
SAM, software asset management, is the part of ITAM that deals with licenses: what is installed, what you are entitled to, and where you are over or under licensed. ITAM also covers hardware, contracts, warranties and disposal.
How many assets does a small business need to track?
Count every laptop, phone, monitor, server, network device and paid software subscription. Fifty staff with a laptop, a phone and a monitor each is already 150 assets before servers, network gear and SaaS, which is why free tiers capped at 100 assets run out sooner than expected.
Can I use a spreadsheet instead?
Up to a few dozen devices, a spreadsheet works. Beyond that it goes stale because nobody updates it when devices move, and it cannot tell you what software is installed. A free tool such as Snipe-IT or Lansweeper’s free tier removes that problem at no cost.
Is ServiceNow ITAM worth it for mid-sized companies?
Usually only if you already run ServiceNow ITSM. On its own, the licensing and implementation effort is hard to justify below enterprise scale, and tools such as Freshservice, InvGate or SysAid cover most mid-market needs with published pricing.
